About the Show

In „The Allure of Devotion“ Pablo Benzo (born 1982, Santiago de Chile, currently residing in Berlin) presents his latest artworks which have been produced over the last 12 months. The oil paintings show cubistic abstracted organic forms such as flowers and plants. Placed in pots on tables and adding a background around it, be it in form of a room or an open space, the effect of a still life is used to create a sense of calm towards the viewer. The carefully (over years) developed color palette, painted in more-than-usual multiple layers add an extra layer of depth to the paintings. In addition, the artist is very specific on the choice of framing, often finding old frames rather that having new ones made, and in doing so giving the paintings a more classic look and feel. All of this results in very harmonious art works. The amount and size of the works have also been taken in consideration of the exhibiting space to translate the feel of the paintings to the complete show as a whole.

Artist Statement

„The haziness and certitudes present themselves and without further explanation are left in oblivion to give way to moments in which there is no awareness. Provided of guidance by the liberating power of brief moments, I find myself flooded by the force of creation. The allure of devotion emerges as a deep answer. I have taken, from the vitality and persistence of my “painter heroes”, the energy to pursue the long and arduous search. In this quest, the passionate nature is exposed in order to shape symphonies of color and figures, where observation, memory, and fantasy converge into a spiritual home. The allure of devotion is not thought of as a parenthesis nor as a specific adventure or an isolated passage in his oeuvre, but as part of a life-long journey.“ Pablo Benzo

About the Artist

Pablo Benzo is an artist with a curious and electric spirit. Currently Pablo works in Berlin, transferring all the driving new prospects of the energetic city into the mysterious elegant shadows of dancing figures in a slow motion. Taking the colors as a main tool of showing his passionate temperament, he shapes them in to harmony with calm forms in oil-based works, collages and sculptures. In his work, he establishes a collaboration between provocative and balanced movements and a gentle spirit in the forms, whether it is with plants, furniture and existing objects or his own personal imagery. He works slowly but methodically and trusts the effectiveness of constant practice for the generation of pictorial discoveries that can turn into innovation.

Gallery Statement

Working with Pablo Benzo for the past couple of years and having had many studio visits it has been a great pleasure, both personal and professional, to experience the development of his style first hand. The passion for and influence of some of the great artists of the past is undeniably visible in his art but Pablo has managed to interpret his idols in a way that neither seems copied nor far fetched but respectful and unique which is not easy with this specific style of art. His paintings are fresh and contemporary and yet could be hanging next to his roll models without ever looking out of place. The combination of his personal character which is calm and good natured but also very focused and deliberate, living in Berlin at the heart of times and not trying to reinvent the wheel by using all sorts of new age tools and materials but sticking to the classic tools of the trade (paint, brush, canvas) results in these timeless artworks.
